Carry Ripple - Jawbreakingly Fantastic

I think we can all agree that Spotify Adverts suck. They disrupt our listening, are increasingly annoying and completely ruin the experience at points, the only positive i've ever have ever gained from spotify adverts, was the discorvery of Carry Ripple. Carry's music has all the versatility one needs, and his first single Trampoline caught the attetnion of popular music reviewer Anthony Fantano. His new single Jawbreaker, shows Ripple is no one hit wonder with a basketball art rock track that will blow the listners socks off. With all this talent and having listened to his spotify advert too many times, we decided to talk about all things Carry Ripple.

Single Number Two Jawbreaker is a carefully crafted slow-core art-rock classic, what was writing this song like and what are you trying to convey with this track?

It was a pretty slow, gradual progress. I had been playing guitar a lot, but not recording as much leading up to creation of the song. I often will record short loops or demo projects in Ableton. Jawbreaker came together from combining lots of these separate files into one large project. Lyrics usually come last for me, while texture and timbre are first and foremost. I don't really seek out to convey anything when writing. That comes in more in the mixing and arranging, to try and make it sound like the best version of that initial feeling the track gives off. It came from lots and lots of improvisation and tinkering on my computer. Everything was written and recorded alone for the most part, besides the bass tracks written and recorded by Kaleb Collins.

A Jawbreaker can be defined as either

(A) A big round piece of candy

(B) A Professional Wrestling Throw

(C) The 1999 Teen Comedy with 14% on Rotten Tomatoes

Which one do you think the single surfies the most?

Maybe C or one of the audience reviews

Carry Ripple went through a name change, any reason for this?

Something easier for SEO and more original. someone told me they were in a band in high school with the same name, and it never felt the same. I also think it sounds kind of ambiguous.

Carry Ripple definitely radiates a better vibe in my personal opinion.

There’s a real mix of genres in your music, what inspires your hybridity and how has your creative process evolved from single to single

Thanks! A friend told me it sounded like some singer-songwriter, and I thought that was funny. I guess it just comes from listening to tons of different music across my life and making a lot of terrible music. When I first started recording my own music, the first two years mostly sounded like garbage.

Garbage but fun to make?

Oh definitely. all a part of learning, and figuring out the process. sometimes it sounds amazing until the next day when you listen back.

Now for the big question, Anthony Fantano is notorious for being overly critical and controversial with his music takes, what was the first reaction when he gave your debut single Trampoline Acclaim?

He was really positive and supportive overall, and so was most of the chat at the time the general vibe was "Woah wtf was that?" but in a good way.

The single itself Trampoline has stood alone for clsoe to 3 years now, does it belong to a larger body of work?

It won't be on my new album, but it I am still proud of how it came out.

As well as quality instrumentals, your lyrics are beyond impressive, what’s your biggest inspiration lyrically?

Hmm, some of my favourites are Billy Woods and Mavi. I also was inspired to play around more with my voice. A lot of that comes from Buck Meek, Joanna Newsom, and Spirit Week.

I did not expect to see Buck Meek and Mavi in the same answer that’s fire

It is mostly subconscious
